Best Beginner Paintball Marker: Proto SLG UL or Smart Parts Ion XE?
Basically I'm trying to get my foot in the door with paintball and I've been slimming down my choices for the past few months now.
I was originally going to go with a Tippmann 98C but decided that since I'm aiming to balance playing woodsball and speedball, going for a gun that can perform on both platforms without breaking the bank is my main concern.
I know Smart Parts is slowly closing its doors but lots of pro shops are still offering to fix Smart Parts equipment without having to ship it off so I'm willing to keep my options open to that.
I know that deep down it's going to come down to which one I like when firing them, but I'm curious what owners of either gun have to say-- or even if anyone has any other suggestions for someone who is looking to drop about $200-300 on a noob marker.
I love the Ion haters.
Have you guys even used one on the field?
As for having to add extras to make it a good marker? Well that's a load of BS. I've been running a stock Ion for the last four years and the only ups I threw on it were a barrel kit (even though the stock barrel is fine) and a new trigger (because I broke the original). As most fields are capped at 15bps and the Ion shoots 17bps no problem, what else would I need to add? The spool valve is one of the best designs out there and there's so little reciprocating mass in the marker it's very easy to hold your rope on target.
The only issue with the Ion XE is Smart Parts are out of business, so there will be no support from the manufacturer. However, Virtue, Trinity and a host of other companies make upgraded boards and eyes and those are still plentiful out there. That being said, the Ion XE is easy to break apart with only one Alan key required to access the back of the firing can.
So I'm in the go with the Ion camp but be prepared for a lot of hating in the safe zone from people who just don't get it.
Oh and I also run an SP-8 (Ion guts and a scenario body) which crushed most of the tricked out A5 and BT Delta guys on the field last time I played.

how do i put in a new trigger frame for my paintball marker?
i want to replace the trigger frame on my spyder xtra with an electric one, and am not sure how to take off the old one. i know how to take out the moving parts assembly on my gun, so i know i'll need to replace the bolt. i do see bolts in front of the trigger guard and at the end of the gun. do i need to take out these to replace the trigger frame?
You have to take the gun apart. Unscrew all the bolts on the frame and open the marker. Remove the old trigger frame and put the new one in it's place. Then put the frame back on and screw in all of the bolts. Take a couple blank shots to make sure that the marker is working. Hopes this helps.
