What all will I need to refill my own compressed air tank for paintball using my own air compressor?

So, I’m just starting to get into paintball and I own an air compressor. Now I know that there are compressed air/nitro tanks out there so I’m not just limited to C02 tanks and having those filled at an expense. I figure it would not only be a lot more cost effective, but more convenient to buy a compressed air tank and just fill that at my leisure with my air compressor. Now here are my questions. What filling adaptors will I need in order to fill a tank? Are certain adapters only compatible with cretin tanks or air compressors, or is there a universal way to go? What in your opinion would be the best Compressed air/nitro paintball tanks and adapters to buy for someone who is just starting out and does not want to break the bank? Last and most important, is this safe?

you cant fill a HPA tank with a regular compressor. HPA tanks the air is compressed to 3000 or 4500psi a regular compressor can only do a couple hundred psi. the compressors that paintball fields use cost thousands.

Can Gas Stations Refill My Compressed Air Tank for Paintball?

I'm not sure where redelman4319 is getting his information but it's a bit false. So is the info from the first two posters.

An HPA tank (compressed air, high pressure air, N2, nitrogen, etc are all interchangeable terms in paintball) holds 3000psi, 4500psi, or 5000psi depending on the tank. The output pressure of a compressor at the gas station or any other low pressure output compressor is going to be less than 800psi total. Generally they only put out 130ish.

The only way that the gas station is going to be able to fill your tank is if they have a high pressure output compressor (totally useless to run air tools off of so there's no reason for them to have one) or if they happen to have a booster/pony pump in the system to bring the output pressure up.

As for redelman4319's explanation it is partially right. CO2 is used as a propellant in paintball, but it isn't the only one that can be used. When used in a paintball situation the tank is refilled with liquid CO2. This liquid phases to gas form once pressure is released by opening the valve on the marker (shooting it) and thus providing 850ish psi under ideal conditions. Filling a CO2 tank with HPA is dangerous (as the poster sort of eluded to in mentioning it will damage the tank) but with an HPA tank there is no worry as they are built for high pressures. He is right in that gas station air isn't going to be the cleanest stuff around. Rarely do places like that filter the air more than with just a dust filter (sponge or brillo material). While there isn't anything really wrong with this, it can lead to problems especially with very sensitive equipment.

Really the only options you have for filling an HPA tank is to take it to a SCUBA shop, a paintball shop, a paintball field, or a sporting goods store that does paintball tank fills. Any other source is questionable and I would hesitate to use it.
